My post about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is now up at Tor.com. SPOILERS for the movie and everything Tolkien.

Trailers (links to YouTube):

  • The Host: this ought to be full of id-tastic possibilities, but the acting seems boring as fuck, even if it weren't Stephenie Meyer.
  • The Lone Ranger: you have got. to. be. kidding.
  • After Earth: Will Smith and son in a post-apocalyptic child-in-jeopardy story. I notice they don't mention M. Night Shyamalan as the director.
  • Oblivion: another post-apocalyptic grimdark story, this time with Tom Cruise. No thank you.
  • Man of Steel: didn't they just reboot Superman? I'm confused. Also bored.
  • Star Trek Into Darkness: having not seen the first, all I can say is that the soundtrack of Inception has a lot to answer for. *horn blare* Also, look, more grimdark!
  • Jack the Giant Slayer: look! something not grimdark! Unfortunately the title character is clearly trying to be Westley in The Princess Bride (he even calls himself a farmboy at one point). And the actor is so pudding-faced and bland that it's hard to believe he's the title character, let alone Westley. (It's worth watching the first thirty seconds just to hear Ian McKellen's voiceover, though.)

Oh, jeeze on Jack -- it may be the pieces they snipped for the trailer, but the two romantic leads look to have no charisma and no chemistry. Also, I'm a little skeptical that ramping up the action is the best way to adapt this particular story. Pity.

The female character is barely there. It looks miserable.

The brief glimpse of her wearing what seems to be gold lame armor does not improve the possibilities.

I had an extremely momentary hope that they were using de Lint's Jack the Giant Killer (which is apparently my default Jack now).

Just as well- I am sure it would be butchered.

Oh, man, I haven't read that in ages, but I have very fond memories of it!

You've hit the nail(s) on the head with your Unexpected Journey review. I've nothing to add.

BTW, I've enjoyed your posting at Tor for awhile now (starting with your LOTR re-read a couple years ago). But if you don't mind my asking, how did you start writing for them? Especially ongoing series as you've been doing?

Basically, I asked.

Okay, a friend suggested it, and one of the people who was then much more involved in running the site was a Internet acquaintance of some years so was familiar with my writing, plus I'd made it through a few chapters on my LJ before running out of steam so there were specific examples of what I had in mind already in existence. So I didn't have to submit samples or a formal proposal or anything. And there's been a bunch of turnover since so I don't know what their procedure is now.

You seem to have been not logged in; not to put too fine a point on it, but do I know you?

No, you don't know me and I'm not a regular reader here (nor do I have a Dreamwidth account). I'm primarily a lurker at Chad's blog and have been for a number of years (and a very occasional ocmmenter), but one of the things that got me reading at Tor regularly was his linking to your LOTR re-read a couple years ago.

I came here from your most recent Hobbit post because I was reminded of something I had wondered way back then, which was basically curiosity over whether you had established yourself as a blogger prior to writing at Tor, or if it was the other way around. Really, I guess I'm wondering how tough it is to get a chance to blog there and am doing some sniffing around.

But it's not my intention to be an anonymous creep. My online space is here (http://www.jjsboyce.ca).

No worries about not having an account, though some kind of name/handle is much preferred because it makes conversation easier.

Oh, I've been blogging for more than 10 years now, though that's hardly a minimum! All I can say is send them a query -- it's unlikely to hurt to ask. http://www.tor.com/page/contact-us My experience with people getting started there is quite out of date.
