These are available on demand through my cable provider this weekend, so I watched them all in a gulp tonight. (I was going to last night but I was done with Con or Bust stuff too late.) The episodes air Monday-Thursday this week; Season 5 premieres Memorial Day.

I don't know if I'll do individual episode breakdowns, as I'll be very very busy all week and away Thursday night to boot. So come back when you've seen them all!

AAGGH CLIFFHANGER HOMEWORLD WTF

Uh, going to rough chronological order:

"Lion 4": wrapping up the meta section? (I didn't talk much about meta WRT "Room for Ruby" but it was very much playing with the expectations we the audience had as well as the ones Steven has.) This was . . . fine, I had no tension at all how it was going to end up, but it was nice. Still on the table: the locked chest inside Lion, Lion himself. (Also why Lion didn't just warp there; cat perversity?)

"Doug Out": I'll very grudgingly accept Mr. Maheswaran being ridiculously irresponsible to bring them along, with him wanting to be important in their eyes (and of course don't conform to what you think others expect of you, but of what is true to you). But they really should have given Onion a ride home, thereby avoiding the plot.

"The Good Lars": I do like that the cool kids are cool because they're relaxed in their self-confidence, not that they're status-hungry and exclusionary. Ube is the Tagalog name for that purple yam. Apparently we shall get no resolution of Steven taking Lars' body over for a day, grar. And a tiny bit of character growth for Lars!

"Are You My Dad": well that was not what I imagined "are you my dad" to mean! Arrgh body horror arrgh. And since when does Steven wear khaki?

"I Am My Mom": I mentioned, AAGGH CLIFFHANGER HOMEWORLD WTF? Yes? Okay then.

So, Steven has Lars for company! Honestly I was hoping Lars had had some idea of sabotage/alternate exit when he bolted, but it was Alexandrite that opened the ship. Well, to be fair, I don't know that he didn't, that's to be determined.

(Also there's no reason that Aquamarine and Topaz couldn't have taken Steven after his reveal AND everyone else, there was basically nothing to stop them.)

Does Steven think he's going to "stop all of this" by being executed? I'm very much afraid so. Ooh, maybe that's what Lars is there for, partly, he won't sacrifice Lars too.

. . . I thought there was more but my brain won't come back online. Maybe I will make more posts later.

"Steven goes to Homeworld for resolution" I could've called, but "Steven goes on a life-changing field trip to Homeworld WITH LARS" is definitely not something I would've expected!

Relatedly, was real nice to have a Lars and Sadie episode that I actually enjoyed; not only was this character growth for Lars but it definitely felt like a watershed moment for Sadie.

Agreed, which I really enjoyed. Make more good life decisions, Sadie! I suggest not living with your mother!

Having now watched this, my reaction is basically "OH YOU ABSOLUTE BASTARDS".

Okay, more nuanced reactions:

* They sure did want to make sure we remembered that there's a locked chest inside Lion. Really, really, really sure.
* Garnet can't tell an XX fetus from an XY one after it's already conceived and developing? Is this a very subtle way of being trans-inclusive, that regardless of chromosomes Steven might have ended up being a Nora?
* I'm so happy that Sadie gets to have friends and be a real person. The Sadie/Lars dynamic is so overtly not okay that I feel like the show must be trying to make a point about it, slowly. Very slowly. Too slowly.
* "The Good Lars" had some of the best pause-the-episode-while-we-laugh lines I've seen in a while.
* I don't have a problem with Mr. Maheswaran bringing the kids along given that they're seasoned warriors with magic powers. They were better equipped to handle the situation than he was. And I like seeing the different ways the humans in Beach City come to terms with there being magical aliens in their lives.
* Aquamarine is so absurdly overpowered that it's really challenging to build an episode around her. Nothing anyone does to stymie her seems plausible.
* Steven saying "I love you" reminded me of Garnet saying it just before he and Peridot drilled down to the Cluster.

And I assume Steven wears khaki because he's trying to be all grown up. It's hard when you're a teenager who looks like a little kid!

Regarding the chest, I've been rewatching S1 and it's remarkable how much of the timing of various events is motivated by Lion's entirely obscured agenda. This is just more of the same. What do you want, Lion?

Also, uh, this is maybe weird, but the first clear look at the remains of the temple (or whatever it is), at about 5:25 into the episode, reminded me of bent knees rising out of the sand. Which would make the door between them a near-literal return to Rose's womb. D: But I could be totally misinterpreting that!

Sadie/Lars... I mean... he's just the embodiment of awful dude to her, every time. And the text keeps setting up redemption opportunities that he totally misses. I feel like it must be based on some real-life relationship that one of the showrunners had or witnessed because nothing else could explain its agonizing prolongation.

Maybe Steven will let himself grow up once Connie has a growth spurt and is taller than him. :)

Ooh, fingers might make more sense, given the shape of the Gem Warship.

Do we have any idea when the next episodes will air? My own fingers are twitching.
