I do not work in that area. But I disagree that readability isn't a skill much valued in the legal arena: I do appellate law and all of my writing is to convince judges. And they all, in turn, will say that concise, clear, and smoothly-flowing briefs make their work a lot easier. They are just highly limited in their ability to effectively discourage bad briefs, since "this attorney is a bad writer" is not actually a reason to rule against the lawyer's client. =>
