I find it difficult to imagine what would be presented as Dent's motivation to act further, since so much of what he did after his traumatic split was fueled by simple revenge. Powerful, but not very nuanced.

Indeed--it'd fit nicely with the other switches (switchings?) of expectation, both within the story and for the audience....
