AKICILJ: pill splitters

So if you're trying to split pills that don't already have a line down the middle, are pill splitters really an improvement over a sharp knife? If so, is there any kind that's better than another?

I honestly don't know, but I can try to ask the Pharmacists tomorrow when I go on service. If I learn anything useful, I'll drop you a note...

I've used one that was very helpful, but I can't find it to tell you what brand it is. The key was to press from the ... narrow end of the angle, if that makes sense.

Pill splitters hold the damned pill still. This is very, very useful.

Mine has a slanting V to hold the pill and a guarded razor blade to cut down. It works for me, and was cheap.

Here's the one I have.

I have that one (or one that's so similar I can't tell the difference). They're really nice for splitting stuff that doesn't have a line already.

Yes, absolutely. I use a similar one, which cost about $5 at Eckerds.

It's handy for splitting the cat's pills -- attempting to use a sharp knife (not sharp enough, in retrospect) resulted in powder.

yes. not only while you're cutting it, but then you don't end up with half a pill here and half a pill somewhere across the room that the pets will probably find and eat.

the majority of my meds are for arthritis which i have in my hands, so the manual dexterity required to hold the pill, cut it with the knife, *not* cut my fingers off is much more than the manual dexterity required to pop the pill on the little angled doohickey and then whack it with the flat of my hand. big fan of pill cutters, me.

Plus, once the pill is split, it's in the container of the pill splitter and not all over the counter.
