How do we define it? How do we draw the line, and what is its appeal? Is it a truth (universally acknowledged...) that only women can write it?

You sure you can't make it to Worldcon?

... I'm going to be at Worldcon, and me and Brenda Clough are actually starting to seriously pursue the idea of publishing "Terminators of Endearment, OR Pride and Extreme Prejudice", our Jane Austen/Terminator crossover. Would that qualify?

I'm bringing the laptop with (though not to panels because it's just too bulky) and hope to be able to transcribe handwritten notes as I go. It's the kind of thing that the longer it sits, the harder it is to do.

The program is really daunting. I have to remember to set limits--no more than two programs in a row, that kind of thing. And I'm not even *on* any of them!

Oh, and I've since read Robins' _Point of Honour_ which is awesome, highly recommended, though I don't know that it's FOM as the only fantasy element is a marginally alternate universe. Also the style strikes me as more hardboiled and less witty than my general feel for FOM.

I liked _Point of Honour_ as well, but I think you're right - it's not quite as airily witty as I imagine most FOMs to be. It has a lot of grit to it, and if I remember (it's been a while), the main character was a little on the stolid side.

Hmmm, I see what you're getting at with "stolid" but it wouldn't have been my first description. The narration is emotionally understated, perhaps.

I can't wait for the sequel, which should be out next week.

I'm an Old Thing, alas; I never brought my laptop to classes, even, to take notes, so I'm not really used to it. Also, my laptop is an Old Thing too: heavy, not such a great battery . . .

I'm tempted, but probably not.

And yeah, Labor Day weekend, September 2-6. Alas indeed.
