I'm not sure I even remember Adam and it's still amazing. (I read the Lymond Chronicles in a fevered haze of sleep-deprived weekends and evenings in 1998 and never since, so I am very, very hazy on large chunks of them.)

And yes, I still plan to do a full recs post for 2010's Yuletide, but I just had to share that now.

This is a tour-de-force. I started leaking tears from the moment that Kuzum got to choose the date. And she really gets in all the little touches of history.

Adam is the artist. He got into terrible trouble in Russia for teaching the icon painters to do things they weren't supposed to be doing. I shouldn't say more for fear of spoilers, but maybe that will jog your memory.

Thanks. I did find the Kate/Adam bits in my ebook of _Checkmate_ last night during SteelyKid's (very protracted) bedtime, and that plus some of the comments to the story jogged my memory about a lot of things, though I may still go and look up his first appearance.
