Not being over fifty, I am not qualified to say whether I feel that there are things harder for people to recognize when they are older.
But I bet you wouldn't have volunteered to mod a panel of this title, written a description of nonwhite characters for the panel, gone into the panel intending to talk about how you have many many betas . . . and then offered up that description apparently without a thorough beta or your own careful consideration. (I say "apparently" because I can't fathom how it could have got through either of those as-is.) So I don't actually think this pitfall was invisible.
That said! I think you will find useful things in the set of panels I will be posting next, which is presently mentally titled the "modes and methods of discussion set" (though that may be too long to be practical). And if you ever found yourself in an analogous situation and needed more time to process before deciding whether you thought an apology was warranted, I personally would be happy to hear you say "I hear what you're saying, I hadn't thought about that, and I'm going to think hard about it now because I take your concerns seriously and I don't actually want to be a jerk." But then, I would say that because I found myself saying something similar (though less extensive--I think it was more like "hey, wow, that's a really good point, I'm going to think about that") in another panel.
