Spike Lee got lots of flak about foregrounding this issue among others of the African American communities in his film musical, School Daze, for one instance.
Some of my lady friends, who are earlyh forties or turning forty, discussed this film and issue among other things, Memorial Day, during what turned out to be also an impromptu memorial to Gil Scott-Heron, since our hostess had all his music on vinyl, and had a turntable to play them on.
There was a lot of discussion that afternoon about hair and skin color. They said some things differently than the panel members, but maybe that's because they're generally a decade older or so than the panel members?
