I *am* the one who recommended _Ill Wind_ on Usenet. I'm not going to tell you it's a well-constructed book, but it sucked me in too.
I will also note that:
"our first-person protagonist loses her virginity to power a magical working"
...isn't really fair. It was character backstory; the point of that scene was roughly "You think your first sexual experience was bad? I accidentally hailed all over my boyfriend." But it also gave backstory for the boyfriend, which is tied into the current (non-flashback) part of the plot. I thought that was kind of deft, really.
The sequel can't possibly be a retread of the first book, which is worth something. Could be worth something good or bad, of course.
