<nod> I audited a small class there in the spring. (Of course "English Legal History to 1650" would be a small class--2nd/3rd-yr elective.) People did bring laptops, with batteries, and the rest had Palm-compatible devices with portable keyboards. I was impressed by the bare fact that everyone brought something to type with. It took only thirty seconds to realize why. ;)
The facilities issue is campus-wide, though. I wonder how soon and to what extent UCB's shiny status will slide, since technological infrastructure is increasingly important for students as well as instructors. UCLA rents laptops hourly to its students (any level/program) for use in a library, for example, whereas UCB so cannot afford to start or maintain that kind of service, the way things are currently set up.
