I've seen way worse covers on good books than that one. From the way Chiang described it, it sounded like something outrageously tasteless, which it isn't.
Actually, I do prefer the UK cover that Chiang said was based on his preferred art. But the US hardcover really isn't that bad, it does point in the general direction of some of the themes in the stories, and it's certainly better than the cover that ended up on the US paperback as a result of this mess (which is the only one I'd seen before now).
