Manga in general tends to use speech bubbles to drag you directly across character's faces. You'll see that a lot of panels above, when they have two bubbles, place them in such a way as to drag the eye across a face in betwee. If there's only one bubble, the face sometimes acts almost like a bubble in balancing the composition of the panel.
1-01-013: Panel 1, Mrs. Stowner's face lies almost directly between the two bubbles. The line across panel 2 goes just under WIlliam's face, and his face, and his face and Mrs. Stowner's face in panel 3 are connected by bubbles. I'm struck by panels 4 and 5, where the speech bubble balances out WIlliam's face, if you view the two panels as a unit.
1-01-018: I didn't notice until just now, but I love this: Mrs. Stowner's speech bubbles form an arc connecting William and Emma, from his bubble to Emma's bubble. Panel 3, the bubbles drag you directly across the two figures. Panle 4, the line goes just under Mrs. Stowner's face.
You can see this on the other pages you ahve, too. One more thing:
1-02-049: in panel 3, I know lots of people who'd slap the bubbles right in between WIlliam and Emma, but that would serve to separate them. When they're on the other side of the figure, they serve to both draw your eye to both heads, and to push them together.
