Mildmay in _Melusine_ & _The Virtu_ apparently speaks with a really thick lower-class accent, but mercifully Monette makes no attempt to portray this and just uses word choice, grammar, etc., to convey his different social status. I find it reads quite smoothly.

Wikipedia alleges that there are non-standard dialect characters in written Chinese for the sub-languages/dialects/differences that make speakers mutually unintelligble, but I'd love to hear more about it from the knowledgeable.
