You characterized

kate_nepveu's disinclination to be on a panel with someone who has been, to put it charitably, screechingly clueless on the topic of race as a puzzling newfangled refusal to engage with those with whom one merely disagrees.

This ignores the long history of minorities being told to 'be nice' and disagree with backbending respect (if at all) with those beating them over the head with racism.
