Somehow I ended up with 75 recs for 2014's Yuletide. I'm splitting this sucker into multiple posts. Here are the book fandoms, which are, as always, the majority. Headers/cut-tags divide up the list in roughly chunks of five, for ease of browsing.

Aaronovitch, Rivers of London (2); Addison, The Goblin Emperor (2); Banks, Culture series

The Cartographer Tries to Map a Course (2018 words) by eudaimon
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Abigail Kamara, Thomas Nightingale
Summary: Wizarding was never going to be the thing for Abigail Kamara - the world was just too wide.

A quiet, lovely look at Abigail and Ettersberg.

Of Wishes and Swords (9800 words) by sprl1199
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Alexander Seawoll, Thomas Nightingale
Additional Tags: Character Study, Pre-Canon, 1970s, Young Seawoll
Summary: It started at one thirty on a wet Thursday morning in March when Alvin Reimer, musician and, in his own words, intermediate level kung fu master tripped over a body in the alley behind Ludwig’s Pawn.

One of the things I like about canon is that though Seawoll is introduced as an antagonist, he's very good at his job, and this is great backstory.

Betrothal Negotiations (1382 words) by atheilen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Goblin Emperor - Katherine Addison
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Csethiro Ceredin/Maia Drazhar
Characters: Csethiro Ceredin, Maia Drazhar, Deret Beshelar, Cala Athmaza
Summary: The Emperor's nohecharei never leave him alone. // The Emperor's bride has her own thoughts on the matter.

More Csethiro, yay! She's so great.

Service (994 words) by atheilen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Goblin Emperor - Katherine Addison
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Isheian (The Goblin Emperor), Csevet Aisava, Echelo Esaran
Additional Tags: POV Outsider, Yuletide Treat
Summary: Isheian was grateful to serve. But that didn't mean she did not want more.

As the author's note says, "For those who might not remember, Isheian is Maia's 'shy little server in the dining room.'" This does what it says on the tin and is lovely.

First Steps (11441 words) by Bagheera
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Culture - Iain M. Banks
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: GOU Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints, Lededje Y'breq, Original Female Character(s), Original Male Character(s), Original Non-Human Character(s)
Additional Tags: Minds (Culture), Drones (Culture), Crimes & Criminals, Childhood, Artificial Intelligence, Surface Detail, Cameos, Meet the Family, Special Circumstances
Summary: "Did I design you a warship or a party clown, child?"

I haven't read Surface Detail yet, but this works as a study of an odd family-ish relationship and an odder Mind, and feels very Culture.

Bujold, Vorkosigan series; Clarke, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2); Cooper, Dark Is Rising series; Dean, Tam Lin; Fry, The Lady's Not for Burning

Lady Vorkosigan's Manor (888 words) by mayachain

Characters: Ekaterin Vorsoisson Vorkosigan, Aral Vorkosigan
Additional Tags: Interior Decorating, In-Laws, POV Female Character, Politics
Summary: After the new Lady Vorkosigan's redecorations, Vorkosigan House has a green silk room.

This story answers why.

The Sand In The Bottom Half Of The Hourglass. (2015 words) by Lanna Michaels
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke

Additional Tags: Yuletide 2014, Yuletide Treat, Coffeehouses, Canon-Compliant, Post-Canon, Regency Era Coffeehouses, Misses Clause Challenge, Romantic Friendship
Summary: Arabella has taken to patronizing a coffeehouse.

I really enjoyed the omnipresent magic in this fic, which is something that is not often seen in post-canon stories for some reason, and their friendship.

City of Salt and Time (10857 words) by Eccentric_Hat
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jonathan Strange, Gilbert Norrell, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Italy, Venice, Post-Canon, Footnotes
Summary: England’s first two magicians of the modern age are somewhere near Venice.

This could absolutely be a sequel. It also has loads of research about Venice, but it's mostly in footnotes, so it doesn't feel like "I've suffered for my research and now so must you."

Tomorrow and Tomorrow (6459 words) by Nope
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dark Is Rising Sequence - Susan Cooper
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Will Stanton, Bran Davies (Dark Is Rising), Jane Drew, Barney Drew
Summary: "So," Will says at last. "Same time next year?"

This tackles the melancholy of the series' ending beautifully.

The Piper (14809 words) by Stultiloquentia
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Tam Lin - Pamela Dean
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Janet Carter/Thomas Lane
Characters: Lily Carter, Andrew Carter, Robin Armin
Additional Tags: Coming Out, Hapless Undergraduates, Greek Mythology - Freeform, Family
Summary: Seven years after Janet and Thomas' ordeal, Lily and Andrew Carter are both students at Blackstock. The ol' impregnation-and-running-tackle trick isn't going to cut it this time.

This works great on minimal memory of canon—though if Greek mythology is real in canon I admit I don't recall, and don't care if it isn't—and feels like a true sequel that avoids being a rehash.

She's young, O god, she's young (1215 words) by DaisyNinjaGirl
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Lady's Not For Burning - Christopher Fry
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Thomas Mendip/Jennet Jourdemayne, Richard/Alizon Eliot
Characters: Thomas Mendip, Jennet Jourdemayne, Richard, Alizon Eliot
Additional Tags: Epilogue, Sleep
Summary: In the chill of an April morning, four runaways discover there's no room at the inn.

It is no longer surprising to me that we get these kind of miracles out of Yuletide, but it's still amazing.

Kagan, Hellspark; Kirstein, Steerswoman; Leckie, Imperial Radch (4)

Lightning Rod Memory (2215 words) by Reyka_Sivao
Chapters: 1/1

Additional Tags: Artificial Intelligence, Languages and Linguistics, POV Female Character, Misses Clause Challenge, Female-Centric, Female Friendship, Humanity
Summary: Tocohl and Maggy seek out cheap memory, act like they know it all, dance around the big questions, and start off on their next adventure.

No plot, just a snapshot of their evolving relationship, and that's just fine by me.

Nights of Yes or No (4477 words) by pendrecarc
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Steerswoman Series - Rosemary Kirstein
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bel/Rowan
Characters: Rowan (Steerswoman), Bel (Steerswoman), Henra (Steerswoman), Keridwen (Steerswoman)
Additional Tags: First Time
Summary: Rowan finds herself in waiting.

I'm technically credited as a beta on this, but the only thing I did was read it and say "wow, it's perfect," so I refuse to disclaim this: it's post-canon, it's perfect, read it.

A stillness full of lights (1723 words) by Raven
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Awn Elming, Justice of Toren One Esk Nineteen | Breq, Mercy of Kalr, Seivarden Vendaai, Daos Ceit

Beautiful, true-to-canon look at music, mourning, community, and identity.

Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Tisarwat, Justice of Toren One Esk Nineteen | Breq, Seivarden Vendaai

A study of Tisawart and, as the tags say, her identity issues post-Sword.

Ancillary Ghost (2229 words) by yhlee
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Seivarden Vendaai
Summary: Seivarden as honored guest, and the importance of tea. // Takes place after Ancillary Sword (spoilers).

Speculation on that character revealed at the end of Sword. Precise, a little creepy, and very much in the style of canon. (Disclaimer: I beta read this.)

Lem, Cyberiad (2); Lynch, Gentleman Bastards (2); Monette, Doctrine of Labryinths

A Further Sally, or The Miracles of Amentia (3420 words) by CenozoicSynapsid
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Cyberiad - Stanislaw Lem
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Trurl, klapaucius
Additional Tags: Mathematics, Humor
Summary: In which Trurl and Klapaucius, the far-famed constructors, visit a planet whose inhabitants hold ridiculous misconceptions about religion. Can their problems be solved with the aid of the Higher Mathematics?

TWO excellent Cyberiad fics this year! This is a book dear to my heart, as my domain name shows [*], and so this is very exciting. Here's the first, which is totally convincing and delightful.

[*] Back in the days of Usenet, you could set an Organization: in one's headers, and people would put in various jokes. I originally used a Culture ship name (GSV Size Isn't Everything), and then changed to The Steelypips, which are from The Cyberiad, shortly before I needed my own domain name. And from there we have the nicknames Chateau Steelypips, SteelyKid, and the Pip.

An Academic Question (2423 words) by vombas
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Cyberiad - Stanislaw Lem
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Trurl, klapaucius
Additional Tags: Academia, Technology, Fanart, Pen & Ink, Illustrated

And here's the second, in which the constructors tackle a question of academic organization; also entirely convincing and illustrated, to boot.

Nazca! Baby con artists! Perfect title from Brooklyn Nine-Nine (and the best AU idea in notes)!

This Secret Alchemy (20531 words) by gamerfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Gentleman Bastard Sequence - Scott Lynch
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Locke Lamora & Jean Tannen & Sabetha Belacoros, Sabetha Belacoros/Locke Lamora

Additional Tags: Case Fic, Heist, Murder Mystery, False Identity, Families of Choice, Platonic Relationships, Teenage Gentlemen Bastards, Fun with Unlabeled Alchemical Potions, Canon Compliant
Summary: Father Chains only wanted Locke, Jean, and Sabetha to steal one little thing from the alchemist. Of course, nothing can ever be that simple in Camorr, especially not for the adolescent Gentlemen Bastards. A tale of thievery, arson, confidence games, cunning disguises, murder most foul, standoffs at crossbow-point, and love triumphant at last.

Another, much longer, "awww, babies" fic (not in the literal sense). Canon-compliant is, if anything, an understatement.

Characters: Brother Cadfael, Olivier de Bretagne, Eleanor of Aquitaine
Additional Tags: Minor Violence, Historical Inaccuracy
Summary: When a murder disrupts the peace conference that might end the Anarchy, Brother Cadfael must solve one last mystery. Fortunately, he has some very competent people to help him.

Not that she's counting. // But when Commander Vimes personally asks her to come to Ankh Morpork and learn the ways of the City Watch, for the good of Borogrovia, she feels she can't say no. She's forgotten Mal, she absolutely has. But then a mysterious someone starts sending her coffee. And that's only the beginning . . .

Additional Tags: Soulmate-Identifying Marks, AU, Yuletide, Yuletide 2014, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary: At twenty-one, Harriet Vane gets her Name. It's rather longer than she expected.

This is a great in-character look at how Peter and Harriet might be if they met just after Whose Body? and were "destined" for each other.

He looked up at Costis with laughing eyes. “I can make it an order.” // In which Thalia Ormentiedes meets royalty....and Costis is definitely in over his head.

The poly negotiations are possibly a smidge flat, but it's great outsider POV.

Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat
Summary: All Clear shows us a few highlights of Colin’s efforts to retrieve the missing historians, but not how he fit all the puzzle pieces together nor why it took ten years. What happened?

A GIANT labor of love, readable with general knowledge of the universe--I haven't read All Clear--and it's really great competence porn, worldbuilding, and character development. (My one reservation is about an aspect of the ending that is mandated by canon.)
