I watched Thor: Ragnarok several months ago and never got around to writing it up, and might as well now to keep myself awake.

The experience of watching this movie was extremely weird because it was exactly like all the Tumblr posts? I don't mean just the colorful pictures, but all the things that sounded like quotes from TV comedies that had been juxtaposed for humor [*] . . . were actual quotes. For instance, Cate Blanchett's villain character saying, directly into the camera, that in the past, "Every great king had an executioner. Not just to execute people, but to also execute their vision. But mainly to execute people." That's not the subtext or a joke by a viewer, that is literally what she says.

[*] On reflection I'm honestly not sure I've seen any "incorrect quotes" for this movie? Not that I'm very good at recognizing these, I spot B99 when it comes around, and there are others that I've come to recognize as incorrect quotes just by sheer repetition. But the whole format is really superfluous here.

Anyway: brightly colored, wacky, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie is magnetic and I'm so excited to see her on the Endgame posters, Chris Hemsworth is the most interesting as Thor as he's ever been and I am definitely glad that carried through to Infinity War as much as it did. My reaction at first was that it was much lower-key about imperialism than I'd been led to expect, but on reflection I think it was just that Thor immediately accepted what Hela was saying, the movie took it as foundational not the central conflict (cf. Black Panther).

Also Hulk and Bruce Banner were in it, though I find I have nothing to say about them? Hmm.

In conclusion, the humor of deflation is just not quite enough my humor that this is not my favorite MCU movie, but I enjoyed it in a slightly-bemused way and I'm glad it exists. But stop shoving comics-canon-queer characters into the closet, for fuck's sake!
