As there are now no more limits on watching syndicated feeds (non-LJ-blogs, with part or all of their posts read by LJ and displayed on your friends page), I thought I'd pimp the feeds I'm watching. Some night when I'm not trying to get to bed, I'll probably cull this list down and post it to [livejournal.com profile] syn_promo.

I'm going to try to keep this list current, as a reference linked to from my userinfo page, so edits will happen without notice.

With the change to splitting out RSS feeds on the user info page, I'm not updating this any more.

Note: If I'm using Real Life names and not LJ names, it's because I'm not positive the LJ names are public. If you want to out yourself as on LJ, fine, but don't out anyone else, please.

These are generally in alphabetical order.

[livejournal.com profile] aldaily. Arts and Letters Daily. A cornucopia of links to articles and essays on humanities-related topics.

[livejournal.com profile] alton_brown. Rants about food and other things from Alton Brown of Good Eats (now on every weeknight at 7:00, opposite Daily Show re-runs!).

[livejournal.com profile] andrewnorthrup. Feed for The Poor Man, a general politics-and-stuff blog (assume all feeds are for politics-and-stuff blogs unless otherwise noted). The occasional pure gem like Every Damned Weblog Post Ever and Shorter Right-Wing Punditry's Reaction to the Valerie Plame Affair: An Internal Dialogue.

[livejournal.com profile] apod. Astronomy Picture of the Day. But you knew that anyway.

[livejournal.com profile] balkinization. Best blog by a professor I took First Amendment law from.

[livejournal.com profile] bugblog. A daily look at computer bugs and fixes.

[livejournal.com profile] calnhobbes. It is truly a shame that there are no new Calvin and Hobbes strips. At least we have re-runs daily.

[livejournal.com profile] calpundit. Kevin Drum's old home, mostly abandoned for:

[livejournal.com profile] wash_monthly. Kevin Drum's new home.

[livejournal.com profile] charles_dodgson. Feed for Through the Looking Glass, a pseudonymous and very sharp blog.

[livejournal.com profile] crookedtimber. Group blog of mostly academics, with a trans-Atlantic flavour.

[livejournal.com profile] gaullimaufry. [livejournal.com profile] marykaykare's blog Gallimaufry (no, I didn't typo either of those names).

[livejournal.com profile] gizmodo. Gizmos and gadgets. I rarely click through to the posts, but the headlines keep me feeling geekishly in-touch.

[livejournal.com profile] gmailgems. Unofficial tips and tricks for Gmail.

[livejournal.com profile] inthepipeline. Posts about drug discovery (pharmaceutical, not recreational).

[livejournal.com profile] invsbleadjnct. Alas, the Invisible Adjunct has given up blogging, but I keep this feed on my list in case she changes her mind and comes back.

[livejournal.com profile] izzlepfaff. If you enjoy this CSI spoof, you might like the rest of the blog.

[livejournal.com profile] jimhenleyrss. This is the everything-including-comics version of Unqualified Offering's feed.

[livejournal.com profile] kittenbreak. Your daily cute kitten picture.

[livejournal.com profile] makinglight. I forgot to send my Hugo nomination ballot in on time. The only reason I regret this is that I couldn't nominate Teresa Nielsen Hayden ([livejournal.com profile] tnh) for best fanwriter. Examples picked at random: Varieties of insanity known to affect authors; Pygmy mammoths!.

[livejournal.com profile] newscientrss. Science headlines.

[livejournal.com profile] nielsenhayden. Feed for Electrolite, Patrick Nielsen Hayden's ([livejournal.com profile] pnh) blog. To plagiarize myself, more politics, less whimsy, but just as sharp.

[livejournal.com profile] niqabiparalegal. Infrequently-updated thoughts on legal issues affecting U.S. Muslims.

[livejournal.com profile] noreascon4. Keep up on news about Noreascon 4, a.k.a. the 2004 Worldcon.

[livejournal.com profile] snarkout. Mini-essays filled to the brim with interesting links.

[livejournal.com profile] shih_blog. John S. Novak III's blog.

[livejournal.com profile] slacktivist. Fred Clark's blog came to my attention because of his brilliant page-by-page dissection of Left Behind, but there's much else of interest here.

[livejournal.com profile] slatemagazine. Because Slate updates irregularly throughout the day.

[livejournal.com profile] snopesrecentadd. Additions to the Urban Legends Reference Pages at snopes.com.

[livejournal.com profile] talkngptsmemo. Josh Marshall's blog (I'd say "but you knew that," except that he appears to be a much bigger fish in greater-blogdom than in the LJ pond).

[livejournal.com profile] uncertprinciple. [livejournal.com profile] orzelc's blog on physics, politics, and pop culture. A former "Blog of Note" on Blogger's front page.

[livejournal.com profile] unmistak_marks. Mike Kozlowski's blog.

[livejournal.com profile] wenspencer. Blog of SF author Wen Spencer about writing and works-in-progress.

And a meta feed: [livejournal.com profile] new_rss_feed. New feeds on LJ.

Oh, cool!

I didn't know the requirement had been removed. Now I can add your book log and a few others I couldn't afford to before.

So with that many blogs, don't they get pushed off your front-25 page incredibly quickly?

It's possible to change how many posts display per page for Recent and Friends pages, separately, under both S1 and S2. I think it may be a free/pay difference. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong; am in hurry.) Plus, one can filter flist output by group, or display only individual accounts; for the latter, append ?show=P to your usual flist URL.

Re: In Passing, how strange, yet logical. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] kate_nepveu--I hadn't even heard of it.

The only reason I regret this is that I couldn't nominate Teresa Nielsen Hayden (tnh) for best fanwriter.

Okay, I am curious; what defines "fan writing" in a Hugo context? Is it simply writing done in a non-professional capacity? So, like, could Neil Gaiman or Ken MacLeod get a "fan writer" Hugo for stuff they write on their blogs?

My favorite is [livejournal.com profile] pepysdiary, which posts one entry from Pepys' Diary a day, tied to the actual calendar day. (Today is April 26, 1661. (http://www.pepysdiary.com/archive/1661/04/26/index.php)). The Website being syndicated has its own user community that is slowly building up annotations.
