Best FMA Accessory Ever

My sister-in-law does origami (for those of you at the wedding, she folded the 1001 cranes that were in the centerpieces and on the tables), and as a birthday present she sent me an origami bookcase, complete with individual books, with a note saying it was a library for Ed and Al.
As you can see from the pictures behind the cut (one of just them, one of all my Fullmetal Alchemist figures), they look very happy to have a bookcase to defend.
(The origami books are very cool; they're folded from a single sheet of paper, and have endpapers and everything. There's another picture behind the cut of a larger one she did for me for Christmas, and a stegosaurus she did for Chad.)
The Elric brothers and their bookcase:
(Looking at the picture, I'm wondering if I have it upside-down.)
Mustang, Hughes, Hawkeye, Winry, and the Elrics (sorry about the shadows) across the top of one of our own bookcases:
A larger book and a stegosaurus:

Date: 2006-08-05 01:16 pm (UTC)The green book is from David Brill's _Brilliant Origami_ (which is supposed to produce a hardcover) with a 6" square of paper.
The books in the bookcase, and the bookcase itself, are from Kunihiko Kasahara's _Origami Omnibus_ (which is supposed to produce a paperback); the books were from a 4" paper. The stegosaurus is from a 6" square, took her all day and is "notoriously hard", and is from Kasahara & Takahama's _Origami for the Connoisseur_.
The paper for the books in the bookcase was wrapping paper that she cut up, because she liked the designs.

Date: 2006-08-05 06:00 pm (UTC)An uncle who used to be a florist incorporated them into the centerpieces by threading them through green wire/stalk things at intervals, which was way cool, and we scattered them on the tables at the reception as decorations/souvenirs.
Umm, that's all I got.

the pattern for the crane is widely available; in fact, it's almost always included with pre-packaged commercial origami paper (especially that sold by aitoh). however, the pattern is also widely available online; here's a link i think is particularly useful, since it has pictures of each step.

once i really got folding, i think i figured it took me about 5 minutes per crane. of course, that doesn't factor in the time for cutting the paper, which can be take quite a while. the online paper seller i used to use is now defunct (::sigh::), but i know a new seller, paperjade.com, has some options for origami paper. in fact, it sells packs of 1000 sheets for under $20; see the link below. if the link doesn't work, try the "economy and variety packs" tab at paperjade.com.

the only problem is that the paper is 1) rather luridly rainbow colored and 2) very cheap. for your cranes, i used a mix of foil, which is usually pretty inexpensive and comes pre-cut in small sizes, and different sorts of washi, which i cut into 2-inch squares. washi isn't cheap, but it's nice and it folds well, and you can get 9 2-inch squares out of a 6-inch sheet, so it ends up being cost effective if a bit labor intensive.
as kind of a side note, i found some interesting photos of different ways to display a thousand cranes; believe it or not, all of the pictures at the link below are actually composed of cranes mounted inside a frame.
