Sometimes I stop and force the person to rephrase: "Did you mean, 'What is my ethnic background', or do you really care that I'm from Los Angeles?" Sometimes I have no patience and say, "Planet fucking Earth." *shrugs*

One thing that niggles at me generally (not re: your post): people of East Asian descent and people who've lived in areas with high % Asian-descent populations are much more likely than anyone else to start guessing. For my part I prefer the questions, even the crude "What are you," to flat assertions, especially when (as [livejournal.com profile] rilina illustrated upthread) the assertions prove the extreme limitations of the person's assumption-set.
