This is fascinating--thanks. I reread seldom, and I'm always interested by the many ways in which people reapproach texts.

Funny that Tolkien would've expected a reader to read just once--a modern reader in particular? He knew about medieval students reading minutely, repeatedly, to learn a text by meditating upon its words and layout.
