SPOILERS.

Jeez, they pack a fuckton of stuff into 11 minutes, don't they?

So there was pop-up programming at WisCon to talk about the Pink Diamond revelation, and it was informal sit-around-in-a-circle and I didn't take notes, but I did remember that I was much more willing to give Pink the benefit of the doubt when it came to the war than a lot of people: both with regard to her motives, and with regard to causation. I mean, don't get me wrong, as we discussed: Pink's actions toward Pearl are emphatically wrong, and whether as Rose or Pink she remains an Anticolonialist Failboat (note that that thread is from before the reveal). But it seemed plausible to me, from what we'd seen, that the course of the war was Pink making pretty reasonable judgments based on the information she had at hand. In particular, it didn't seem obvious to me that Pink should have expected Blue and Yellow to react to her "shattering" with the corruption.

And this episode gives us a reason that she didn't tell Garnet and ask her to use future vision to evaluate the plan: she wanted to preserve the rebels' belief in her as a Gem who chose her own path, because she was inspired by the choices they were making on their own paths. Was this an optimal, or even good, decision? No, of course not. Was it an error made in good faith and for a reason that was not wholly selfish? I think so.

Was it as serious a thing to come to grips with as Rose shattering Pink? I also don't think so, and so I remain cautious about the show walking that back.

(The airing schedule continues to do the show no favors: letting the Rose = Pink revelation sit around without this context probably gave a lot of fans time to harden their hearts, and for me, I suspect the lumpy pacing likely influences why I was holding so hard to Rose having shattered Pink.)

Amazing work by the VAs, on Pearl and Rose's development over the episode. And Pearl! For all the words I just spent on Rose/Pink, I can't believe how much we got about Pearl (hah, I knew that horrible outfit meant she was a gift from Blue and Yellow) and how far she came, I love her so much.

It did not escape my attention that Rose told Pearl "please don't ever stop" when Pearl was confessing her feelings, just before they briefly fused. My suspicion is that binding orders have to be stated as such ("for my last order to you as a Diamond, please, let's never speak of this again"), but just making a note of it.

And now I have things to do and cannot rewatch this split-screened with "The Answer." Alas.

I woke up this morning thinking "OF COURSE Rose felt she had to bubble Bismuth, because she was scared the Breaking Point would be used against her! And she couldn't say so without revealing her secret!" and have been waiting all day to come here and say that.

I really hope there will be more of Bismuth now that that can be discussed.
